What is a Phlebotomy Technician?

A phlebotomy technician is a primarily hands-on healthcare professional responsible for drawing blood and prepping it for further medical testing. Most jobs that require a phlebotomy certification & training are found in hospitals or doctors' offices, so technician's spend a lot of their time working with patients and families. This makes the job an ideal position for people with excellent communication skills, due to the amount of patient interaction it demands.

Tasks of an Average Phlebotomist

In addition to working closely with patients, phlebotomy technicians carry out a variety of duties to assist physicians, such as gathering any tools needed for upcoming appointments and making sure everything from the blood collection devices to the bandages are stocked at all times. Handling blood can be very dangerous if not done properly, and is not something that should be taken lightly. Obtaining phlebotomy not only opens more job opportunities in the medical world but increases your potential pay scale and provides you with subject-matter expertise.
