Want to help others in your community but don’t want to take eight or more years to become a doctor? The good news is that CyberTex offers an LVN program at our Austin and Killeen campuses that can be completed in a fraction of the time needed to become a doctor. Plus, our LVN program focuses on real-world skills and direct patient care. Are you ready to become a frontline worker? This article will examine what an LVN does and how long it takes to become an LVN.

What Does an LVN Do?

LVNs are the backbone of the medical team. They are the liaison between the patient and the rest of the medical staff. Here are the duties of an LVN on a day-to-day basis:

Keep Patient Records

LVNs keep track of the care they give, what medications are administered, and how the patient reacts. Precise and accurate records help the entire medical team understand what’s happening with the patient. For example, if a patient walks after surgery, the LVN notes how far they walked and how they felt doing it.

Provide Patient Care

LVNs help patients with everyday needs like bathing, eating, going to the bathroom, and getting dressed. They also check vital signs such as blood pressure, respiration rate, temperature, and heart rate. They help keep patients comfortable and safe throughout the day. For example, an LVN may help an elderly patient get out of bed, clean up, and have breakfast.

Give Medications

LVNs are trained to give medications like pills and injections. They follow instructions from doctors or registered nurses and watch for side effects. Keeping track of medications and how the patient responds is a key part of the job. For example, an LVN may give pain medicine after surgery and check in later to see if the patient is in pain.

Monitor Patient Health

LVNs pay close attention to any changes in a patient’s health. They report concerns to doctors or RNs so action can be taken quickly. They also update patient charts to keep everything organized. For example, if a wound looks infected, the LVN will write it down and alert the nurse in charge.

Support Doctors and RNs

LVNs often assist during routine medical tasks and procedures. They may prepare patients for exams or explain what to expect before a test. They’re an extra set of hands and eyes for the rest of the medical team. For example, the LVN may prep the patient and explain the process before an X-ray.

Work in Different Settings

LVNs can work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, or even people’s homes. They take care of all kinds of patients, from newborns to seniors. For example, a home health LVN may visit someone’s house daily to check on recovery after surgery.

How Long Does It Take to Become an LVN?

The LVN program at CyberTex can be completed in as little as 60 weeks, attending full-time. This accelerated timeline allows you to enter the nursing field quickly. An LVN program combines classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience, covering essential topics such as pharmacology, nursing skills, anatomy and physiology, and nursing ethics. You will engage in both theoretical learning and practical application, so you are well-prepared for the demands of your new career.

Upon completing the program, you can sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Passing this exam is an important step toward obtaining a license as an LVN in Texas. CyberTex provides support throughout this process, including exam preparation and guidance on the licensure application. At CyberTex, you can transition from education to employment with comprehensive training and dedicated support.
