What are the Requirements to Become an HVAC Journeyman?

To become an HVAC journeyman, you must complete the following requirements:

Age

You must be at least 18 years old to hold most HVAC / ACR licenses.

Technician Registration

Before doing work independently, you must register with the state of Texas as a technician if you work under a licensed HVAC / ACR contractor. That means your work is supervised.

Work Experience / Practical Hours

To qualify for a journeyman-level or contractor license (to work more independently), you need sufficient on-the-job experience:

The standard path for contractor licensing requires 48 months (i.e., 4 years) of practical experience with a licensed contractor within the past 72 months.

Education / Certification Option

Courses can help substitute part of the time or help you qualify for technician certification earlier:

Texas offers a Certified Technician status. To become certified, complete a department-approved training program (often ~2,000 hours of combined instruction and practical work) or equivalent experience.

Exams / Licensing Tests

After meeting experience or certification requirements, you will need to pass the appropriate licensing exam for contractors. The class (A or B) you apply for (size of equipment, BTU / ton limits) determines your exam.

Insurance / Other Requirements
