Do you like working outside the office? Are you good with your hands and have a keen attention to detail? If so, consider commercial refrigeration as a career. After completing the HVAC program at CyberTex, you will be ready to start working as an industrial refrigeration installer’s apprentice. With some experience, you will work toward a role as a journeyman industrial refrigeration installer. So, what is commercial refrigeration, and what does an industrial refrigeration installer do?

What is Commercial Refrigeration?

Commercial refrigeration includes the cold storage used in grocery and convenience stores, as well as perishable storage in restaurants and warehouses. Commercial refrigeration equipment is opened and closed many times throughout the day, and the system needs to maintain a constant temperature to keep items at safe temperatures. That is where the industrial refrigeration installer comes in.

What Does an Industrial Refrigeration Installer Do?

The industrial refrigeration installer is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial refrigeration systems. On a day-to-day basis, an industrial refrigeration install may:

Install a Complex Refrigeration System

Many industrial refrigeration systems are complex and have a lot of moving parts. These systems include the following components:

Compressor – what pushes the refrigerant through the system. As the gas moves through the system, it is squeezed and becomes hotter. The compressor transfers the refrigerant from the evaporator to the condenser to release the heat from the system.

Condenser – helps release heat from the refrigeration system.

Evaporator – helps remove the heat from the refrigeration system.

Expansion Valve – regulates the flow of refrigerants to keep a consistent temperature.

Thermostat – controls the temperature inside the refrigeration system that turns the compressor on and off.

Cooling System – helps either circulate cool air through the refrigeration system or cool an intermediate fluid that cools an element.

Refrigerant – absorbs and releases heat. At a specific temperature and pressure, it condenses and evaporates.

Troubleshoot a Malfunctioning Refrigeration System

An industrial refrigeration installer must use their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify the cause of a malfunction and develop the best solution to fix the problem. It is best to have a methodical approach, using a checklist to avoid missing steps in the process.

Replace Faulty Parts

The industrial refrigeration installer’s job is to replace faulty parts to ensure the system runs at peak performance. Leaving faulty parts within a refrigeration system can reduce the system’s lifespan and cost the client additional money to fix and replace equipment unnecessarily.

Communicate with Clients about Refrigeration Needs

The industrial refrigeration installer works with the client to understand their needs and creates a plan to install and maintain the refrigeration system. They will answer the client’s questions and manage refrigeration system parts for repairs.

Maintain and Test Refrigeration Systems

The industrial refrigeration installer will maintain and test refrigeration systems to ensure they are at peak performance levels. In the HVAC technician diploma program at CyberTex, students learn how to use testing equipment. With hands-on training, you will be ready to maintain and test refrigeration systems.

How Do You Become an Industrial Refrigeration Installer?

A great way to become an industrial refrigeration installer is to complete the HVAC Technician diploma program at CyberTex. We have flexible day and evening classes and educational benefits for those who qualify. We offer the EPA 608 certification through ESCO Institute; students obtain a certificate and card proving their ability to handle refrigerant safely and responsibly. CyberTex also offers 20 certifications through Esco Institute and 3 employment-ready certifications:

  • Heat pump
  • Commercial HVAC
  • Commercial Refrigeration
