Medical Assisting Diploma Program

This 11 month training program will prepare you for an entry-level position in a doctor’s office, hospital, clinic, or other medical facility. During the Medical Assisting program, you will learn clinical and administrative skills.

Clinical Skills

The medical assistant works directly with the patient and uses their clinical skills to assist the physician during the diagnosis and treatment process. Some of the clinical tasks include:

Meeting and Greeting Patients – as a medical assistant, you are the first person most patients will meet when they visit a doctor’s office. It is essential to offer an excellent first impression and work as the liaison between the patient and physician. As you walk them to the exam room, you are watching their gate and identifying any issues you may want to note for the physician.

Recording Medical Histories – it is critical to keep track of the patient’s medical history so that the physician can make better treatment decisions. This can also alert you to a patient who is not taking a specific medication or a medication that may affect their vital signs.

Taking Vital Signs – taking vital signs at every appointment is crucial. This helps the physician establish a baseline to measure subsequent vitals and understand trends needing additional attention. As a medical assistant, you will take the patient’s temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. Oxygen saturation, weight, and height can also help physicians understand issues and ailments.

Preparing Patients for Examination – some patients may be anxious about their appointment. It is essential to help patients stay calm and educated so they know what to expect. You also want to prepare the patient so that when the physician enters to start the exam, the patient is situated and ready. You wil stock supplies and sterilize instruments for the physician’s efficiency and effectiveness.

Assisting the Physician During Exams – an extra pair of hands can be handy during a patient exam. Some medical assistants will pass instruments, while others take notes.

Collecting and Preparing Lab Specimen – a physician may request you to collect and prepare a lab specimen. Lab tests can tell a lot about a patient’s health and offer additional indicators for diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Drawing Blood – as a medical assistant, you will be trained to draw blood. You will learn the proper procedures and processes to keep the patient safe and code specimen containers. You may process the specimen in the lab or prepare it for third-party transport.

Administering Electrocardiograms – a physician may need to investigate concerns about a patient’s heart. You will learn how to administer an EKG to record the electrical signals in the heart and help diagnose symptoms of a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmias.

Administrative Skills

The medical assistant will support the office staff with administrative tasks. These tasks include:

Answering Phones – you will answer phones and triage patients according to the level of severity of their ailment.

Setting Appointments – As a medical assistant, you are keenly aware of the time needed to complete an exam or test. This makes you the best person to set appointments and keep the physician’s schedule optimized.

Billing and Coding – you will process billing to keep the facility running smoothly and add coding to electronic medical records to properly document the patient’s medical data for a better health outcome.
