The Medical Assistant program at Cybertex Institute of Technology in Killeen gives students the skills and the know-how to work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other medical facilities.
Thanks to the externships our students complete at the conclusion of our Medical Assistant program, they actually get to go into doctors’ offices and do the very work that they’d do as medical assistants. For some students in our program, it’s actually functioned as a “working interview,” with those externships becoming jobs. For other students, it’s been a valuable experience that shines on a resume.
Our externship program gives each student 160 hours of hands-on experience – either in four 40-hour weeks so a student can experience full-time medical assistant work, or in 8 20-hour weeks to mirror the program schedule.
In an externship, a medical assistant student works as a medical assistant, taking what he or she has learned with real patients in real-life situations. Since it comes at the end of the program, it’s an ideal transition between learning how to become a medical assistant and actually doing one.
We partner with a variety of medical offices, from family practice doctors to specialty clinics, in Killeen, Temple, Belton, and Georgetown. We coordinate with our students, based on their schedules, transportation, and interests, to find the best fits for them individually.
But we’re not limited to the region around our campus—we can help students coordinate externships in a different region of Texas or even out of state. For students who are moving—like military spouses who are going to a new base—this is particularly helpful.
