Are you active duty or a military veteran? Ready to start a civilian job but not sure where to start? Many of the skills you learn in the military directly translate into civilian jobs. Whether it is leadership, self-sufficiency, good communication skills, integrity or the ability to perform under pressure, the military has given you a solid skillset to build upon when starting a new civilian job after the military. Did you know that there are also many military financial benefits that CyberTex offers incoming students? Let’s look into the steps involved in getting a civilian job after the military.

How Do I Get a Civilian Job After the Military?

There are a few steps that we recommend you follow when getting a civilian job after the military. These steps include:

Step #1: Identify Your Skillset

The first step in getting a civilian job after the military is to understand what kind of job you are skilled to perform and what piques your interest. CyberTex offers many vocational opportunities in healthcare, construction, and computers. Even if you don’t have all the knowledge and skills needed to start working a new civilian job, CyberTex can help. We allow you to explore a new career and get vocational counseling to find the right opportunity for you.

Step #2: Attend a Vocational Program

Once you have chosen the right vocation, it is time to use your military skills to complete your education. CyberTex offers educational training to accomplish your rehabilitation goal. We utilize your skillset and transfer your knowledge and discipline to the task at hand. We also offer on-the-job training and non-paid work experience so you can prepare for day one of your new career. However, are you asking yourself, “How can I pay for this education?”

Step #3: Pay for Your Education

So, now you know which vocation is right for you but not sure how you will afford tuition and all the other fees associated with schooling? CyberTex offers many veteran and active-duty benefits for those students pursuing higher education while or after serving in the military. The following are military education programs we support include:

Chapter 33 – Post 9/11 GI Bill – if you are eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, there are many benefits available. These benefits include a maximum of 48 months of VA education benefits, not including Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) benefits. You may be eligible for tuition, fees, money for housing, the cost of books and supplies and some money to help move from a rural area to go to school. CyberTex financial aid staff will help you apply for these VA benefits.

Chapter 31 – Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits – a benefit that is offered to military veterans with service-connected disability that limits their ability to work or prevents them from working. The program helps veterans learn new skills, find a new job, start a business, get educational counseling, and return to a former job.

Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty) – helps pay for education and training programs for those that have at lease 2 years on active duty. The amount of money you receive under the Montgomery GI Bill depends on length of service, type of education program, category of program, and a few other criteria.

Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill (Selected Reserve) – offers up to 36 months of education and training benefits for members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marie Corps, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard or Air National Guard. Benefits are eligible to those that qualify.

Chapter 32 – Post-Vietnam Era Education Assistant Program (VEAP) – benefits to continue education by using part of your military pay to help cover the cost of school. Benefits are determined by the Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program, a government match program for educational assistance.

Veteran Rapid Retraining Assistance Program (VRRAP) – CyberTex is a VA-approved institution eligible to offer the VRRAP program in Austin and Killeen. If you meet the minimum eligibility, there are many benefits to the VRRAP program. As a VRRAP eligible student, you may get up to 12 months of tuition and fees and a monthly housing allowance based on Post-9/11 GI Bill rates.

Step #4: Complete Vocational School

The next step after enrolling and paying for your vocational program is to graduate with a certificate, diploma, or degree. CyberTex offers programs in medical assisting, nursing, HVAC, and computer engineering. Any one of these programs is challenging but we offer small class sizes and guidance from industry experienced instructors to guide you through the curriculum.

Our instructors know what you need to succeed in your given vocation and support you with one-on-one attention to guide you through the curriculum. You will also receive lots of experience and hands-on training to build your confidence, preparing you for the first day of your new career. CyberTex supports active duty and veterans in the exploration of the next chapter in their story.

Step #5: Find the Right Job

A great benefit to attending a vocational school is the career services that we offer. We take pride in finding the job that fits your passion. We help you build a solid resume, prepare you for interviews, write thank you letters and identify job opportunities. Employers in the community understand that military veterans have a unique skillset that translates into less on-the-job training saving resources. Our career services staff has strong ties to community employers and help you find the right job that fits your skillset.
