How Do I Get My Military to Pay for College?

Education benefits are available for active duty personnel, veterans, and their dependents. Some of the Military Educations Programs CyberTex works with include:

Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® helps military veterans pay for school or job training. This can include payment of tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a stipend for books and supplies. Additional fees may include a college fund payment, rural benefits, or Yellow Ribbon payments.

Tuition and Fees – payments are issued directly to the school on behalf of the military veteran at the time the certificate of enrollment is processed.

Monthly Housing Allowance – payment is issued directly to the student at the beginning of each month for education and training, based on the rate of pursuit.

Books and Supplies Stipend – issued directly to the student when the school certifies, and VA processes the enrollment.

Yellow Ribbon Payment – the degree-granting institution enters into a voluntary agreement with the VA to fund tuition expenses exceeding the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.

College Fund or “Kicker” – payments are issued directly to the student based on the rate of pursuit and the education benefits program under which the kicker is payable.

Rural Benefit Payment – a one-time, lump-sum payment of $500 is issued directly to a student who resides in a county with six persons or fewer per square mile.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31)

Payment is offered to veterans with service-connected disability that limits their ability to work. The Veteran Readiness and Employment program helps veterans explore employment options and addresses education needs.

Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (Chapter 30)

Offers veteran educational benefits for up to 36 months. The benefits can be used for degree and certificate programs. Veterans must be honorably discharged, with a high school diploma or GED, and meet specific requirements.

Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)

An education program that provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserve. Reserve members may use the education benefits for vocational school training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, tuition assistance, correspondence courses, and national tests.

Dependents Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)

Education assistance program for the survivors and dependents of military veterans who are disabled or died while on Active Duty. The program offers dependents up to 45 months of education benefits for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training.

Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

A program that provides information, resources, and tools to Service members and their loved ones to help transition from military to civilian life.

Post-Vietnam Era Educational Assistance Program VEAP (Chapter 32)

A government-match program for educational assistance that extends benefits to active-duty personnel and veterans who enlisted in the military between January 1, 1977, and July 11, 1985.
