Are you a veteran of the armed forces or currently active duty? Did you know that you can attend college at the same time? And there are educational benefits that can cover college expenses. The GI Bill® is one of the main educational benefits for veterans, active duty, dependents, spouses, and survivors. So, what is the GI Bill®?

What is the GI Bill®?

The GI Bill® is funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs to help active duty armed forces members, veterans and their family cover tuition and other costs related to job training. There are multiple programs under the GI Bill®. Eligibility requirements and funding amounts vary for those that qualify.

What GI Bill Benefits Cover College Expenses?

There are benefits for veterans, active duty, dependents, spouses, and survivors. Many are classified as GI Bill benefits but there are a few additional educational benefits for those serving in the armed forces.

Post 9/11 GI Bill® – those eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill® can apply for a maximum of 48 months of VA education benefits. You may be eligible for tuition, fees, money for housing, the cost of books and supplies. Plus, you may be eligible for money to help move from a rural area to go to school.

Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits – an educational benefit offered to military veterans with service-connected disability that limits their ability or prevents them from working. The Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits program helps veterans learn new skills, find a new job, start a business, and get educational counseling.

Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty) – helps pay for education and training programs for those that have at least 2 years on active duty. The amount of money you receive depends on length of service, type of education program, category of program, and a few other criteria.

Montgomery GI Bill (Selected Reserve) – offers up to 36 months of education and training benefits for those serving in the armed forces. Benefits are eligible to those that qualify.

Post-Vietnam Era Education Assistant Program (VEAP) – benefits to continue education by using part of your military pay to help cover the cost of school. Benefits are determined by the Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program (VEAP), a government match program for educational assistance.

Dependents Educational Assistance – VA Benefits offered to dependents and survivors of veterans. You may qualify for Chapter 35 benefits or job training through the GI Bill® program.
